Icis is an adorable 10-year-old Domestic Short Hair that was recently adopted. When she was brought to her new forever home, she was drinking a large amount of water and not eating well. The next day, she was severely lethargic, weak and began walking abnormally, which prompted her family to take her to the emergency service at the Animal Medical Center of Seattle. She was quickly triaged and examined due to concerns for her stability.
Icis was dehydrated, hypotensive (low blood pressure), hyperglycemic (high blood glucose), and had severe electrolyte abnormalities. Her liver values were also very high. She was resuscitated and treated aggressively with IV fluids, a feeding tube, electrolyte supplementation, antibiotics, insulin, and gastroprotectants. She ultimately was diagnosed with pyelonephritis (kidney infection), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease), and diabetic ketoacidosis (a complication from diabetes mellitus). Abdominal ultrasound also revealed her urinary bladder wall was inflamed due to a urinary tract infection. With so many complications at once, her prognosis for survival was guarded.
Miraculously, after being hospitalized for a week with intensive care and supportive therapy, Icis made an incredible recovery and was able to go home with her family! We are happy to report that Icis is doing well, and a recent recheck of her blood work looked great! Although Icis will likely need to be on insulin for the rest of her life to manage her recently diagnosed diabetes, she is quite the lucky kitty. <3
