Lulu presented to our Emergency service for vomiting and constipation. Diagnostics revealed that this sweet girl had severe azotemia (increased renal values). Lulu spent three days in our ICU, receiving intravenous fluids and supportive care. Lulu has been a patient of Dr. Spry from our Internal Medicine service for a few years now, and she saw Dr. Spry again the following week for continued care and a more thorough workup for her azotemia.

At this appointment, additional diagnostics were performed to ensure that her renal values were normalizing. One of the samples we obtained was a urinalysis. Using our ultrasound, Dr. Spry found that Lulu’s bladder was on the side of her abdominal wall, which could be the cause of her severe azotemia.

Lulu was transferred to Dr. Howser of our Surgery service, and the team successfully performed a hernia repair to place her bladder back within the limits of her abdominal wall and repair the area where the bladder had slipped through. We are pleased to share that Lulu recovered from surgery well and has continued to do very well at home!

We are thankful for our team of specialists who support our Emergency service and the patients who need further care. In Lulu’s case, she was seen by our Emergency service and was able to be internally transferred to the additional services that she needed without having to leave our hospital.
